Professor Edmund Malesky from Duke University, Dr. Neil McCullock from Oxford
Policy Management and Dr. Nhat Nguyen Duc from VIETSURVEY newly published
their article on Economics of Transition.Constructing a panel of Vietnamese enterprises
between 2006-2010, the authors have matched an unique data set on both sides of crucial
function which investigate the causality between local governance, transparency and
private investment. The paper contributes to the literature with their key findings that
transparency with special regards to the public posting of planning documents is highly
associated with the higher investment. The relationship between the private investment
and the other forms of traditional governance aspects are found however insignificant.
The paper provides foods for thoughts and challenges the orthodoxy approach of
international development partners who urge the developing economies to reform
governance comprehensively to induce investment. The paper can be found at Economics
of Transition Journal,Volume 0 (0) , 2015 1-39, DOI 10.1111/ecot 12068 and the working
version titled “Does Better Provincial Governance Boost Private Investment in Vietnam?”
can be downloaded free from IDS Working Paper Series website.
